She and Him

She and Him came to Salt Lake to sing to me. Isn't that nice of She and Him?

Office View

It's good and bad. Good because I witness all the comings and goings, which makes the queen trafficker of information. Bad because it's quite distracting watching all the comings and goings. When we move offices at the end of the week, I don't have this view anymore. I'll probably feel sort of out of the loop now. But maybe a bit more productive.

I should probably get tinted windows for this

It started in Grad School. The G parking passes allowed us to park just below the the Tanner Building, so when I got tired, I could easily hop on down to the car for a quick snooze. It didn't take me long to figure out that the backseat was much more conducive to naps. And so it continues today. Naps in the backseat sometimes save me in busy season.

My mom turned 60 today

But don't mention it to her. She's still getting used to the idea.

Lincoln Street

I picked up catering from a barbecue joint in our old neighborhood (for my mom's birthday party tomorrow) and drove past the house we lived in during my elementary school years. It looked so small. In fact, the whole street looked small. I guess the memory in my mind's eye is from a smaller, shorter version of myself.

What a cute place, huh? There used to be a giant (or was it?) pine tree next to the driveway with branches that went to the ground. Naturally, it was my fort.

Shoes

Confession: I leave a trail of shoes wherever I go. Like, in my car, under my desk, all over the guest room floor. I better pick them all up before Wendy comes to visit in a couple of weeks!

Rain

It poured rain today, so I wrapped up in my scarf and set out to get lunch and a Starbucks steamer (warm, yummy!). Man, I needed that. The exuberant, splashy dash down the street was just what I needed. When you can only enjoy outdoor weather for a few moments every day, you hope for it to be just as exciting.

Frizz and Frazzle

I wouldn't say that I've been particularly beautiful these days. So, I guess it's a good thing that no one beyond this office space has seen me lately. After this week, I hope to implement a morning regimen that incorporates more brushing and makeup time.

Comfort Food

Moochie's. A darling from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I got the Atomic which is a meatball sub with spicy sauce. Yum!

After this week, my stress level should come down from where it has been hovering at 5,000 volts (or however stress is measured) for the past few weeks. With that, I look forward to implementing an eating plan that isn't based on the mantra, "I just really need this right now."

RIP: the best fish in the whole wide world

My beloved goldfish died. I'm so sad. There is something in the water here in Utah because I've had to clean out their tank much more often. Well, I got busy and I didn't realize that we had gotten to emergency water conditions so quickly and I came home to dead fish. So sad!

Dirty Harry and Goldy Obama, you will be missed!

PS... posting this picture from months ago breaks my general rule of having a daily photo, but it was for obvious reasons.

My mom's garden

She puts tons of work into this and it's is gorgeous!

Uh, I don't think so

Is what I said outloud when--at 10 pm on a lonely Saturday night in the office--the doors opened up to reveal a completely dark elevator. I paused for two seconds and thought I could use my phone as a little light while riding the elevator down eight flights. And then I took the stairs.

2002

Salt Lake City was at its best during the Olympics.  Picture: international camaraderie, free concerts, streets packed with festival-like activities.  I love that there are little reminders of it all sprinkled around town.

Visitors!

Ryan and Cheyney (formerly of LA now Raleigh and maybe soon Colorado Springs) were in town with their baby. So we got a crew together for dinner who were also in town: Bethany (currently of LA - my former apartment to be exact) and Catherine (sorry your face is cut in half) (currently of SLC but soon to be Redondo Beach).

Everyone should come here to visit me! It's my favorite.

Avoid mutiny: Disclose your preference of condiments

Utahns love condiments and I am no exception. (Hi Fry Sauce! xoxo!) But when it comes to ranch dressing, Utahns (weirdly) seem to think that the pairings are endless. Well, appropriately hip as a New York homage should be, Este Pizzeria has banned ranch. That's right Utah, go to Pizza Hut if you want your pizza dipped in ranch dressing! Or go to the State Fair where they probably deep-fry ranch-dipped pizza. I'm guessing.

(Delicious pizza, btw! Second South just east of State Street.)

That time of year

When the parking lot is quite empty by time I leave work. At least the commute home is exceptionally speedy!

Piles

Trying to see if I can make my piles of work look kind of sexy with a new camera app. August. 6, 2010.

Main Street lives

Main Street was quite comatose for a while there during all that construction a few years ago and before the now-booming downtown revival. It's quite charming now and quite lively.

Weather

Utah has weather. (California didn't really - or at least it was always so constantly pleasant that you never noticed the weather.) We've been getting nightly thunderstorms and I just love watching the sky change as the mini-storm du jour rolls into town. August 4, 2010.

Under construction

We're moving offices at the end of the month to the new City Creek development. That is, assuming they finish it on time.

Do you think the new office will give me a new vibrance and outlook on life like a fabulous new outfit could? I could use a new vibrance and outlook. But that's just busy-season-me talking.

Isn't it lovely how the morning sun glistens in the dew collected in spider webs. August 2, 2010.

Dinner guests

These two little cuties and their parents came for dinner. The two-year-old showed me how I need to work on childproofing. August 1, 2010.

tour your town

Tonight, a group of girls toured some local sites. We had to do it at a rapid pace to make it to all of the places in the small timeframe of post-work/pre-closing. And you know what? Running around them at Olympic walking competition pace added to the fun. Then we'd hop in a Suburban to the next stop and speed walk around the next location. It was quite enjoyable.

At the Utah State Capitol building, we paused to take some pictures and then a nice man from Singapore offered to take pictures of us with his wide-angled lense Nikon. Then he asked to be in some pictures with us. It was awfully cute.

And so, all pictures above have been taken by Andy from Singapore. Good guy, that Andy from Singapore.
